Where do utility lines run under downtown Vancouver?
Made with NeuraCities
Under downtown Vancouver's core district, City records show about 55 km of sewer and drainage mains. Water mains, a dedicated fire-protection water system and street-lighting and electrical conduits run alongside them under the streets and lanes.
| Utility | Inside the downtown district boundary |
|---|---|
| Sewer & drainage mains | ~55 km (659 storm, 480 sanitary and 26 combined segments) |
| Water transmission mains | ~3.4 km |
| Dedicated Fire Protection System (DFPS) mains | ~3.0 km of the 11.6 km system |
| Water distribution mains | mapped citywide |
| Street-lighting & electrical conduits | mapped citywide |
| Metro Vancouver regional sewer trunks | none inside the district boundary |
The DFPS is a separate high-pressure network of mains built for firefighting in the core.
How this was worked out
- Data comes from City of Vancouver Open Data: water distribution and transmission mains, DFPS mains, sewer and drainage mains, and underground street-lighting and electrical conduits.
- Regional sewer trunks come from Metro Vancouver.
- Lengths are measured inside the City's downtown district sub-area boundary, about 1.7 km².
Limitation: only City and regional utilities are mapped. BC Hydro, gas and telecom networks are not included.
What it did
- Found data for water distribution
- Found data for water main
- Found data for water network
- Found data for water pipe
