Where in Austin are streets with no trees?

Made with NeuraCities

In downtown Austin, 59 of 576 street segments, about 4.4 miles in total, have no inventoried street tree within 30 m. Two-thirds of that length is I-35 with its frontage roads and ramps. The rest is short stretches of Baylor St, N Lamar Blvd, Brushy St and a few downtown blocks.

StreetSegmentsLength
I-35 main lanes, frontage roads & ramps294.7 km
Baylor St50.49 km
N Lamar Blvd (and its 15th St ramps)60.47 km
Parkway20.25 km
Brushy St20.21 km
Holly St20.12 km
13 other streets (one segment each)130.9 km

The farthest segment, on Enfield Rd, is about 167 m from the nearest inventoried tree. On average, the treeless segments are 88 m from one.

How this was worked out

  • We used the City of Austin downtown public street tree inventory (7,295 trees) and City of Austin street centrelines.
  • We kept the 576 street segments inside the area the tree inventory covers, then measured the distance from each to the nearest tree. Segments with none within 30 m are counted as treeless.

Limitation: this tree inventory covers downtown only, and it records public trees, not private yards.

What it did

  • Found data for street centerline
  • Found data for street centerlines
  • Found data for roads
  • Found data for tree inventory
