Which parts of Denver are a mile from groceries?
A food access grant wants tracts, not anecdotes: low income and more than a mile from a grocery store. Two datasets, one buffer, one join. Here it is as a single question.
Marcus needed tracts, not anecdotes, and the definition was already written in the grant: low income and more than a mile from a grocery store. NeuraCities took the definition literally and produced the map in one pass.
How the 28 tracts were found
Two datasets and one analysis:
- 220 grocery stores and supermarkets across Denver, from OpenStreetMap.
- 178 Denver County census tracts from the 2023 American Community Survey, each carrying its median household income.
- A one-mile buffer around every store, dissolved into a single service area. Every tract outside that area with a median income below the city's median was kept: 28 of them, shown in orange on the map with the income distribution charted beside it.
What to ask next
The definition is the whole result, so change the definition: half a mile on foot instead of a mile as the crow flies, corner stores counted or not, the population living inside the 28 tracts. Each is a sentence in the conversation. The map redraws; the method holds.
