I am pricing a travel plaza in the Sandhills and the pitch is fast charging. Where in Nebraska is the nearest fast charger actually far away?

The Nebraska towns more than 50 miles from a fast charger

Charging apps show the plug nearest to you. Flip the question: which towns are farthest from any? In Nebraska, 21 of 529 towns are more than 50 miles from a public fast charger, and the farthest is 70.8 miles out.

A charger map answers one question: where is the nearest plug from here. Anyone deciding where the next one should go needs the reverse: which towns are farthest from any. NeuraCities answered that for every town in Nebraska in one pass.

How it got to 21 towns

Two public layers and one distance calculation:

  • 529 incorporated cities and villages from Nebraska's municipal boundaries layer.
  • 1,153 public DC fast charging stations from the US DOT's Alternative Fueling Stations data: the 96 in Nebraska plus those in the six neighboring states, so a town near the border is measured to its real nearest charger.
  • For every town, the nearest station and the straight-line distance to it. 21 towns are more than 50 miles away. Cody is the farthest at 70.8 miles, followed by Nenzel at 68.7 and Merriman at 67.2.

Read the number carefully

These are straight-line miles, so the drive is longer. The stations are the federal list as it stood on the day of the question, and new ones open every month. A station counts whether it has one fast plug or twenty, and whichever network runs it. Most of the state is not badly off: 324 of the 529 towns are within 20 miles of a fast charger. The next questions are one sentence each: the same map by driving distance, or counting only stations with four or more plugs.
