Got asked tonight why 'our ward has no bikeshare.' I said I would check. Can you get me the station count for all eight wards, not just ours, before Thursday?
Which DC ward has the bikeshare?
Ward 2 has 116 Capital Bikeshare stations. Ward 4 has 27. One question put all eight wards, and their docks, on one map before the next ward meeting.
Axi's question was really 'is our ward being skipped', and NeuraCities answered it for all eight wards at once, with the docks counted too.
How it got to 116 of 419
Two layers from Open Data DC and one analysis:
- The 2022 ward boundaries, and the Capital Bikeshare station points, which carry a capacity field. The regional system has 866 stations; 419 of them sit inside the District.
- Each station was assigned to the ward it sits in, then the stations were counted and their capacities summed per ward.
- The wards are shaded by station count and charted beside the map. Ward 2 has 116 stations and 2,744 docks; Ward 6 has 74 and 1,605; Ward 4 has 27 and 457.
The number to say on Thursday
Wards 2 and 6 hold 190 of the 419 stations and 4,349 of the 8,423 docks, more than half the docks in the District. Wards 7 and 8 together have 69 stations. The fair follow-up is the gap, not the count: ask the conversation for the parts of Wards 4, 7 and 8 more than a 400 meter walk from any station, or weight the counts by population. The answer changes; the minute it takes does not.
